Sen. Jeff Flake: Taxpayers have right to know how money is spent

UPDATE (1/26/18): The FDA announced it is permanently ending its nicotine addiction experiment and sending dozens of monkeys involved in the study to a sanctuary. Read more.

Last week, White Coat Waste Project announced our new campaign to challenge the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) secrecy about its taxpayer-funded nicotine addition experiments on baby monkeys. In particular, FDA has unlawfully refused to provide WCW with videos, cost information and other details about the project that we requested using the Freedom of Information Act.

Among the many critics of FDA’s failure to be transparent about these experiments is U.S. Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ). Flake is the author of the influential Wastebook that documents reckless government spending, and he was one of the recipients of WCW’s inaugural Waste Warrior award last year.

Flake FDA quote

In an exclusive interview with Rare, Sen. Flake remarked:

Taxpayers have a right to know how agencies are spending their money. Transparency is the best way to ensure tax dollars are directed towards transformative research rather than being wasted on treadmills to nowhere.

The last part of Sen. Flake’s comment is a reference to wasteful government-funded experiments he’s exposed in which shrimp, monkeys, fish and other animals are forced to run on treadmills.

Please join WCW and Sen. Flake by urging FDA to release videos and other documents about it’s cruel nicotine addiction experiments on baby monkeys.

While it is true that this is wasted taxpayers money, more importantly it is abuse. Cruel, inhumane abuse causing suffering to living, breathing animals that feel pain, sadness, fear, just as humans do. This must stop. Saving the money is a side issue. Stopping the selfish, sadistic, cruel “experiments” is paramount.

As a taxpayer, I deeply resent that my tax dollars are spent on something like this. And, yes, these tapes should be released.

The torture, abuse, amd death of all animals at the hands of the V.A. must stop! Immediately release all video in your possession.
