WCW Exposes Secretive Spending at Taxpayer-Funded Primate Prisons

Did you know that there are seven taxpayer-funded facilities called “National Primate Research Centers” that confine a combined 27,000 primates for use in wasteful and cruel experiments? Probably not, because they thrive on secrecy.

So, let’s do a roll call:

  • California National Primate Research Center, University of California-Davis
  • Oregon National Primate Research Center, Oregon Health and Science University
  • Southwest National Primate Research Center, Texas Biomedical Research Institute
  • Tulane National Primate Research Center, Tulane University
  • Washington National Primate Research Center, University of Washington
  • Wisconsin National Primate Research Center, University of Wisconsin-Madison
  • Yerkes National Primate Research Center, Emory University

These primate prisons waste tens of millions of tax dollars each annually to infect monkeys with disease, drill into their skulls, addict them to street drugs and alcohol, psychologically torment them and abuse their babies. Here’s some footage of what Yerkes is doing with your money:

Not only do they waste your money abusing primates, but they’ve also been keeping it a secret, in violation of federal law.

You see, long-standing federal law requires taxpayer-funded animal experimenters to publicly disclose in press releases and other public documents how much of your money they spend on their wasteful and abusive projects.

But, we’ve uncovered that for years these rogue NPRCs have violated this law with impunity, and we just filed a federal complaint over these rampant transparency violations.

Help us hold these and other rogue labs accountable!  Tell Congress to protect animals and taxpayers by passing the Cost Openness and Spending Transparency Act—the COST Act—to require public price tags on all taxpayer-funded projects and withhold money when those taking the cash don’t comply.
