Lawmakers Re-Up Bipartisan Bill to Battle #BeagleGate

Since first launching our campaigns in 2016, White Coat Waste Project (WCW) has done more than any other organization to find, expose and defund cruel and wasteful taxpayer-funded experiments on dogs and puppies.

We made history last year by shutting down the last of the Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) painful dog experiments. Building on this bipartisan success story, we’ve set our sights on the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which wastes more money on cruel dog testing than any other government agency.  Right now, tens of thousands of beagles and other dogs are being sickened, mutilated, and poisoned in NIH-funded labs across the country.

Fortunately, WCW, taxpayers, and animals have friends in high places. We’ve just worked with Congressman Greg Steube (R-FL) to re-introduce the very bipartisan Protecting Dogs Subjected to Experiments Act (HR 574), which would defund all NIH dog testing!

Joining Rep. Steube as original cosponsors of the bill were Reps. Chuy Garcia (D-IL), Chris Smith (R-NJ), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), David Schweikert (R-AZ), Dina Titus (D-NV), Bill Posey (R-FL), Jimmy Panetta (D-CA), Brian Mast (R-FL) and Elissa Slotkin (D-MI).

This op-ed we co-authored with Rep. Steube last year explains why this bill is so important for guarding taxpayer dollars and puppies from waste and abuse at the NIH.

Our viral #BeagleGate campaign has sparked international uproar and prompted U.S. lawmakers to take action to stop the abuse of dogs in tests bankrolled by Dr. Fauci’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and other NIH divisions. Some of the NIH’s wasteful taxpayer-funded canine cruelty at home and abroad that we’ve exposed include:

Last year, we scored a major victory in our War on Waste at the NIH when we worked with Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) and Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) to expose and stop Dr. Fauci’s plans to abuse puppies in a series of wasteful and completely unnecessary $1.8 million tests to study a new seasonal allergy drug.

And our exposé of NIH’s $2 million “coke hounds” experiment got Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) treatment in his latest report on government waste (he’s also held NIH’s feet to the fire about other dog tests exposed by WCW).
