  • A new White Coat Waste (WCW) investigation exposes how the Department of Defense’s (DOD) Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU South) lab in Lima, Peru, is wasting millions of tax dollars to abuse a threatened primate species in dangerous virus experiments.
  • The Navy’s NAMRU South lab infects Nancy Ma’s night monkeys with diarrheal diseases, dengue, malaria, E. coli, and other deadly pathogens.
  • Videos and photos uncovered by WCW show the small monkeys being caged, tattooed, and prepared for shipment to NAMRU South’s high-risk pathogen lab.
  • The Navy lab spent another $200,000 to buy more monkeys as recently as August 2025.
  • NAMRU South and its primate tests are currently funded by over $28 million in active DOD grants and contracts, some of which are scheduled to run through 2028.
  • Records show that monkey experiments at NAMRU South have been funded with tax dollars by the DOD, Dr. Fauci’s National Institutes of Health division, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the U.S. Agency for International Development.
  • WCW has filed a Freedom of Information Act request demanding records on the Navy’s dangerous foreign primate testing lab.
  • The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention just announced that it is shutting down its primate labs following WCW’s efforts. WCW is urging the Navywhich banned all dog and cat testing earlier this year, citing WCW’s advocacyto do the same.

A new White Coat Waste (WCW) investigation exposes how American taxpayers are footing the bill for dangerous, cruel, and wasteful virus experiments on a threatened primate species at a U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) bioagent laboratory in South America.

Records uncovered by WCW reveal how the DOD’s Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU South) lab in Lima, Peru, has been purchasing dozens of small Nancy Ma’s night monkeys—a species listed as threatened due to their rampant illegal capture for experimentation.

At the NAMRU South high-risk bioagent lab, the primates are infected with diarrheal diseases, dengue, malaria, E. coli, and other deadly pathogens.

According to official military reports, NAMRU South can confine up to 130 monkeys.

WCW’s investigation uncovered that the monkeys abused at NAMRU South are supplied by a captive-breeding facility run by the National University of San Marcos in Iquitos, Peru.

Photos of monkeys being inspected at National University of San Marcos prior to shipment to NAMRU lab in 2023.

Receipts show that as recently as August 2025, the DOD spent $200,000 to buy more night monkeys from this colony for experimentation at NAMRU South. Another $100,000 DOD contract issued in 2023 that runs through 2028 is paying to purchase even more monkeys for the Navy lab.

NAMRU South and its primate experiments are currently funded by over $28 million in active DOD grants and contracts first issued under the Biden Administration.

Records show that monkey experiments at NAMRU South have also been funded with tax dollars by the DOD, Dr. Anthony Fauci’s division of the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the U.S. Agency for International Development.

WCW has filed a Freedom of Information Act request demanding documents related to NAMRU South’s cruel and wasteful monkey experiments.

Last month, the Trump CDC confirmed that it’s shutting down its primate labs following WCW efforts. Our campaigns have also eliminated monkey experiments at the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Now, it’s time for Trump’s Navy to end these painful primate tests, too, after its historic ban on all dog and cat testing earlier this year.

Taxpayers should never be forced to bankroll monkey experiments overseas—especially at a high-risk military bioagent lab.

The solution is simple:
